Hot Topic

There have been two pieces of legislation passed this year, which substantially change the Physical Therapy Practice Act. HB163 becomes effective on July 1 and HB164 becomes effective on August 1, 2012. The first one allows for unrestricted direct access to do evaluations and for treatment without a referral under specified conditions. It also allows physical therapy to be performed subsequent to a referral by a Chiropractor, Nurse Practitioner, and Physician Assistant. The second legislative change relates to the development of a Wellness program for impaired practitioners, removes “registered’ as the designation of a physical therapist (removing RPT) and the term registration throughout the Statute, allows the Board to place a restriction on a license, removes “Technician” as a definition for the Physical Therapist Assistant, defines a physical therapy aide, and authorizes the Board to collect a fee from continuing education providers.  There are a few other changes related to how the Board operates. Please go to the Board’s website for the exact statutory language.

The Alabama Board of Physical Therapy wishes to make ALL licensees aware of recent changes to the Physical Therapy Practice Act. ALL licensees are expected to be aware of and compliant with, all the Statutory and Administrative Code language governing the legal practice of Physical Therapy in Alabama.
